What is an On-Rim Tire Change

An on-rim tire change implies that your summer and winter tires are already fitted onto their rims, generally eliminating the need for removal.

Preparation: Tools and Safety

Before initiating the tire change process, ensure you have the right tools. You will need a high-quality jack, a lug wrench, wheel wedges, gloves, and a flashlight if working under low-light conditions. Prioritizing safety, ensure your vehicle is parked on a flat surface, the parking brake is engaged, and your wheels are blocked off, preventing your vehicle from rolling.

Step-by-Step On-Rim Tire Change

  1. Loosening the Lug Nuts: Begin by loosening the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Do not remove them entirely at this stage.

  2. Lifting the Vehicle: Place the jack under the vehicle at the designated jack points. Lift the car until the tire is off the ground.

  3. Removing the Lug Nuts and Tire: Remove the lug nuts completely once the vehicle is securely lifted. Pull the tire off the rim with care.

  4. Inspecting and Preparing the Rim: Before mounting the new tire, inspect the rim for damage. Ensure it is clean and free from debris.

  5. Mounting the New Tire: Align the new tire with the rim and push it into place. Ensure it sits evenly around the rim.

  6. Securing the Tire with Lug Nuts: Hand-tighten the lug nuts onto the bolts. Lower the vehicle partially to apply some weight on the tire, then tighten the lug nuts in a star pattern using the lug wrench.

  7. Lowering the Vehicle and Final Checks: Fully lower the vehicle and give the lug nuts a final tighten to ensure they are securely fastened. Check the tire pressure to ensure it matches the vehicle's recommended settings.

  8. Torque your wheels: Torqure your wheels to their appropriate torque spec.
